Holistic Therapy
Trauma Affects Our Entire Being
When people go through trauma, they are affected in many ways: emotionally, physically, mentally, socially, spiritually, etc. Because of the breadth of impact trauma has on more than our thoughts and emotions, I integrate a holistic approach into my therapy practice.
Our Initial Focus
When you meet with me for therapy, we will explore the different ways you have been affected by the traumatic event. The internal thoughts that convince you that you are not good enough or that you are crazy have affected your emotions. I will introduce you to a new dialogue that will promote self-acceptance and teach you skills that will help you regulate any depression, anxiety, or stress.
Physical Well-Being
If there any signs that the trauma you experienced has affected you physically, I will help you find a doctor that can treat your physical health. We will also explore how your body expresses the trauma.
When you remember a traumatic event, your body may freeze, your heart begins to race, and you start to sweat. This may happen even though your mind is telling you that you are safe. We will work together to help your mind and body communicate together so you no longer re-experience your trauma.
Spirituality Under Question
When you experienced the trauma, it may have caused you to question your spirituality or it may have strengthened it. Whatever the case, this is important for us to talk about in therapy because it is another area that will help you heal.
Lost Family and Friends
Socially you may be struggling because your internal shame may have made it difficult to connect with your friends and family. Having a strong support system is important for your recovery. When we meet, we will discuss ways to build these relationships into healthy relationships. This rebuilding may extend to coworkers, children’s friends and parents, and even further afield.
Using a Variety of Therapy Techniques
While we go through therapy, you may notice that talk therapy is no longer as affective as it once was. This is because trauma affects multiple parts of your brain. By using art, hands-on activities (sand tray therapy), and EMDR therapy it will allow you to heal the different parts of your brain that have been affected by the trauma.
