How to Support a Victim of an Abusive Relationship

How do I offer support?

Questions often asked by those whose family or friends are involved in an abusive relationship: How do I really support someone who is in an abusive relationship? Why don’t people in abusive relationships just leave? Where do I go for help because I’m feeling overwhelmed helping my loved one in an abusive relationship?

Training those who support victims of abuse

If you are a family member/friend of an abused victim, or a church member or agency who wants to learn more about how to help someone in an abusive relationship, I would love to have you attend a training I offer. This training will equip you with tools and understanding on how to be an affective supporter and resource for abused victims.

In the training, we will explore the dynamics of an abusive relationship and how these dynamics interfere with a victim who might want to leave. We will also talk about how to support a victim without interfering in their own decision-making process. I will teach you about the different resources in Colorado for victims of abuse.

When you help your loved ones who are being abused, you start to notice you are struggling with stress and feeling overwhelmed, as well. In my training, I also leave room for members to talk about their struggles in helping their friends or family members going through abuse.

Abusive relationships affect the support network

Abusive relationships do not just affect the members in that relationship but also the support network and community outside of it. It is important that you are being supported and being taken care of, too.

How do I attend a training? You can attend a monthly training, or you can schedule one for your church or agency.
